Discovery Steindachner, 1864, Verh. Zool. Bot. Ges. Wien, 14: 260.
Type locality "Rio do Muría bei Sitio do S'Pedro Gurção, nördlich von Vigia zur F. reguezia [= Freguenzia]", Pará, Brazil.
Holotype Holotype (NHMW 19189) is to be found in the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria.
Etymology
Classification Closely related to D. tinctorius and D. auratus and is a member of the Dendrobates tinctorius group.
Synonymy English name: Splash-Backed Poison Frog
Dendrobates paraensis Boulenger, 1914 "1913", Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, 1913: 1028-29. Syntypes: BM (8 specimens) in het British Museum in London. Type locality: "Para", Brazil. Synonym van Silverstone, 1975, Science Bulletin. Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, 21: 11; Silverstone, 1975, 21: 27.
History
Physical description Size 30-40mm. The colouring is usually black with a yellow or orange "splashed" back, like a paint has been dropped on his back. The colouring on the back can vary from yellow via orange and (red)brown to black.
Distribution Lowland forests of southern tributaries of the Amazon, from the Rio Tapajós east to the mouth of the Amazon, Brazil.
Biotope The lowest layers of the forest where little light reaches the ground.
Care and breeding Dendrobates Galactonotus is a ground dweller, that can easily be kept in a vivarium of 60x40x40 cm with a temperature between 25 and 27°C. The light is for these frogs not really important. They lay about 12 eggs. Care is similar to the care of Dendrobates tinctorius.
