Poison Frogs - Species - Dendrobates Castaneoticus


Discovery Mrs. Cadwell and Mr. Myers, 1990. American Museum Novitates, New York, 2988: 1-21 [1].
Type locality "primary lowland forest near Cachoeira Juruá, Rio Zingu, State of Pará, Brazil....approximately 03°22'S, 51°51'W ... within a loop of the Rio Xingu, about 220 km S of its junction with the Rio Amazonas".
Holotype Holotype (MZUSP 64775) in the Universidade de São Paulo, Museu de Zoologia in Sao Paolo, Brazil.
Etymology Places the tadpoles often in the hollow shells of the paranuts that are called "casthana" in Portuguese.
Classification D. castaneoticus is a member of the Dendrobates quinquevittatus group.
Synonymy English name: Brazil-nut Poison Frog
History
Physical description Dendrobates castaneoticus is a little black frog with a white stripe pattern and an orange spot in the armpit, loins and underpart of the leg.
Distribution
Biotope Known only from the type locality and from Taperinha, near 300 km to the northwest of the type locality (Pará, Brazil).
Care and breeding Similar to Dendrobates ventrimaculatus, at a temperature of 24 to 28°C.
