Some of these morphs are not original colour forms, but interbreeds of different other morphs, sometimes created by breeders, sometimes the result of natural co-incedence. Geography
Guiana, Surinam, French Guyana en the border with Brazil.
Biotope D.tinctorius lives in the low land rainforest and is mainly a ground dweller. They stay in the neighbourhood of fallen trees, tree roots, between the fallen leaves. They rarely stay near streams and close to streaming water.
Care and
conditions
Requires a lot of space, a pair would require 150 litres of space, They like water absorbing materials on the bottom and against the walls like fernroot or cocospanels. Unlike some other poison frogs, they like the vivarium to be dry, no water sections required, there are reports that this is even bad for the frogs. However humidity needs to be high at least between 80 and 100 %. A humidifier does a good job or regular misting. Leaves as floor decoration provide a good habitat, which will also provide a good way to keep the vivarium clean and "sterile" due to the desinfecting character of certain leaves. The temperature should be high, around 25 - 27 degrees Celcius during the day. During the night the temperature can drop a few degrees.
personal
experience
D. Tinctorius is a relatively shy frog, although they are big they like to hide, but due to their size and colour you always see a few of them even in a densely planted vivarium like mine. At this moment i have 4 D. Tinctorius "oyapok" frogs living together with 6 D. Leucomelas in the large vivarium. Although they have the reputation to be mosthly ground dwelling. They can climb the glass walls and are also spotted in the higher regions of the vivarium. Compared to the leucomelas they tend to stay lower on average. Tinctorius is a large frog indeed. They have a big appetite and can almost contiuesly eat food. Although their size enables the eating of larger pray they prefer small stuff like the smal fruitfly and springtales. This is the first edition after watching these fine animals for a few days now, updates and films will follow soon.
